If you own a Xbox 360 guitar controller (either the Rock Band Strat, or the Guitar Hero Xplorer or Les Paul) you can use the MIDI Hero which is a program designed to let you use your Xbox 360 guitar controller as a MIDI controller.
Through an external MIDI interface you can connect it up to a synthesizer, or you can use it with a MIDI program on your pc.
In this video demo it has been used a MIDI software guitar in GarageBand.
